Visual Guidelines for TV Appearances and JPEG Information
With few exceptions, you
must watch a production prior to being a guest
- see show calendar
MAKE SURE YOU READ THE JPEG
INFO BELOW.
It's critical to keeping the show on track during filming.
- OVERALL- On TV, most physical things
(props) can be very exaggerated, otherwise you are a couple of ants
tracking across the screen. It is hard to make anything over the top.
- AVOID-: stripes or bright red, or
bright white. Clothes with these attributes, do weird things on TV screens.
- IN-STUDIO ART-
If you work big, bring one large piece of art with you. If you have
art that is four feet tall or larger, great! If you are a non-canvas
creative, for the set ambiance, bring the largest "prop" of
whatever it is you've created.
Foreshortening has a big effect on screen, so that if you place a small
sculpture in the front of you on the table, it will appear larger for
the viewing audience. Likewise, a medium sized painting hung behind
you reduces to a small piece and not show up very well on TV. The solution
is to bring large canvases into the studio and save the smaller pieces
for the TV slides (jpegs).
- PRE-SHOW-
Bring your on-screen clothes with you to the studio and change after
you arrive and eat.
- WOMEN- Big Chunky necklaces are cool.
So are interesting scarves. Do not wear baggy, or loose clothes.
If you have a fitted jacket or shirt, that would work. (Yes, a jacket
- remember, you will be reduced to 5 inches tall, if you are lucky,
Start paying attention to professional talk shows for ideas.)
HINT: Look in the mirror when sitting in your outfit. Your standing
look is different than your sitting look.
- MAKE-UP-
We use heavy make-up in front of the cameras. Think stage make-up.
MEN: We'll do the make-up at the studio for you.
ALL: Powder to cut shine is the least you can
do. Blush and Lipstick are vital too.
- HAIR-Do something with you hair, even
if you have minimal - especially the women.
ALL: If you don't want to do anything to your hair, wear a black artsy
French beret. If your head is lacking hair and is shiny we'll powder
it for you if you don't have a beret.
HINT: See your hairdresser that day for your regular haircut/style,
then ask her to go wild! Tell him to amp it up an evening photo-shoot.
Watch TV anchor people, or talk show hosts for hair ideas.
- SHOES- Wear anything but tennis shoes.
Your feet have a 50% chance of being in the frame.
- SLACKS- Jeans are OK. We'll be sitting
and, if you are on the outside position, they look fine from the side.
- AUDIENCE- Invite your friends to
come and watch the taping!
- JPEG SIZE-
The graphics requirements are set by the computer
graphics display panel, and they are:
-480 pixels tall maximum
-720 pixels wide maximum
-best resolution
-end size will be between 100 and 900kb
Note: You can reduce a large graphics file, but resizing small
(web-based) graphics adds no quality and still looks fuzzy when seen
on TV.
- JPEG NAMES-You must name your files
as such:
NUM_NAME_SIZE_MEDIA (example: 1_name-of-image_24x48_oil.JPG , 2_name-of-image_36x36_acrylic.JPG)
| Note: |
You can do whatever you what with your episode:
put it on the Web, or send it to your mailing list, galleries, or
museums, or organizations. You just can't make money from it.
We'll define the focus a few days before. We always pre-interview
and stick to what we agreed to talk about at that time. |
